Moi University Cerebrates 30 Years of Anniversary

Vice Chancellor Prof. Richard Mibey shares a word with Retired President H.E. Daniel Arap Moi during the cerebration's.

Moi University cerebrated 30 Years since it was started. The cerebration's were done at Moi University Students center hall. The ceremony was opened by retired president His Excellence Daniel Arap Moi. Present were Previous Vice Chancellors, Chairman of University Council prof. Jenesio Kinyamario, Former Chancellor prof. Allan Ogot, Former Chairman of Council Ivan Mwai, Former Minister of Higher Education Prof. Magret Kamar among others. The occasion also marked the official opening of Moi University TV Station - Kenya Television Services ( KTS). Speaking during the ceremony Retired President recounted the time when there was one university before the birth of Moi University. "There was need for a second university and there was  a dilemma on where to locate it. I realised I had my 3000 Acres in Eldoret which I wanted to do commercial farming as it was endowed with rich soils. The more I thought on farming, the more my heart went on Kenyan children and I surrendered my Land" said Moi.

The former head of state called on Universities to strengthen their mandate on research and categorically on cancer in a bid to find a cure. Education Principal Secretary Kipsang Belio said the institution has tremendous influence in the country education landscape. Dr. Belio challenged Universities to establish petroleum  and Gas courses. " We have oil in Turkana and it is important  for courses that suit the ongoing exercise. This will dater labour import yet our children can deliver in the same field." he said.

Moi University triumph at this year’s Kitale National ASK Show

Deputy Vice Chancellor Student Affairs Prof. Nathan Ogechi receives a trophy from Cabinet Secretary of Agriculture and fisheries Dr. Felix Koskei. Moi University was recognized as Best Institution of Higher Learning, Best Engineering Based Institution, Best University Stand and Second Best in Research Development.

Moi University won three trophies in this year’s Kitale ASK Show  at the Kitale Show grounds. The show opened its doors to the public on Tuesday 28thOctober 2014, and officially closed on Saturday 1st November 2014.The theme of the exhibition was: “Enhancing Technology in Agriculture & Industry for Food Security and National Development”.

Among several Universities that participated like University of Nairobi, Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology (JKUAT), Kisii University and  Mt. Kenya University, Moi University emerged the best in the following categories.  

·         Best University Stand– First position

·         Best Engineering based Institution – First position

·         Best Institution of Higher Learning in Development and Advanced Technology– First position.

·         Best University in Research and Development- Second Position

Speaking after receiving the Award plates from the event officials, the show committee chairman Prof. Sulo thanked the staff and students who participated in the event.

The following schools and departments participated.

·         College of Health Sciences. Represented by: Dr. Joel Kirinyet, Dr. Christine  Otieno, Finson Bargoria. The college comprises of School of Medicine, School of Dentistry, School of Public Health, School of Nursing.

·         School of Information Sciences represented by Gilbert Langat and Okumu Mala (Moi University Radio)

·         School of Engineering represented by John Akwiri and Ann Cherus

·         School of Aerospace Sciences represented by Captain Miren Haria and Irene Waweru.

·         School of Biological and Physical Sciences represented by Raphael Opondo, Paul Kipkorir and Beatrice Jemutai.

·         School of Tourism Hospitality and Events Management represented by Mr. Peter Mutinda, Eric Kibukuru, Cirus Mweu and Erica Hando.

·         Moi University ALUMNI Association represented by Ms. Elizabeth Jeptoo and Ms. Damaris Gacoki.

·         Moi University Bookshop, represented by Mrs. Lily Nyariki and Joseph Barno.

·         Moi University Firm, represented by Abel Okari and Cevix Ambani ( Elimu Millers)

·         RIVATEX E.A Ltd represented by: Anastancia Nzila and Geoffrey Koech.

·         Moi University Admissions Department represented by P.C. Tuwey

·         Kitale Campus.

The college of health sciences mounted exhibits showcasing various academic and research programs geared towards preparation of manpower to tackle health problems affecting farmers. “Qualified personnel are already working in the community addressing issues of health such as cancer, HIV/Aids, parasitic infestations, life style diseases such as obesity, diabetes, and high blood pressure.” Said Dr. Kerinyet.

The University Choir led by Fred Ongeri presented items as guests kept coming. Students from various schools and the general public could not hide the joy

The Vice-Chancellor Prof.Richard Mibey,a section of the University Management,Deans ,Campus Librarian & Director braved the Chilly Nairobi Morning on the 18th of October 2014 to address the new students at Nairobi Campus.
Getting Inspiration from the Karate Club which was one of the performing acts of the day, The Vice Chancellor categorically stated that the it was an Honor to be of service to the students as the core mandate of the institution was to nature disciplined and creative  students to be Employers rather than employees.
A section of the University management reiterated the same sentiments creating a sense of purpose amongst both the staff and the new students as they embark on a journey in Moi University-Nairobi Campus.
The event came to a close at 1130hrs with the beautiful Campus Choir bidding farewell to all the invited Guests.
