Promoting Leadership and Governance within the Student's Council

The First ever Leadership Forum for Students leaders from universities in Kenya was held on the 22nd January 2016 at Moi University-Nairobi Campus. The event saw over two hundred young leaders across all the Students Governing Councils from various varsities and colleges attend and engage one on one with the industry players .some but not all who were in attendance included Kenya Institute of Management (KIM), Managements University of Africa (MUA), St. Paul University, Zetech University, Multimedia University (MMU), Kenya College of Accountancy University (KCA-U), Kisii University, African Nazarene University (ANU) and Moi University Main and Nairobi Campus.

Top of the agenda was the impact of Leadership and Governance within and without the greater University Communities, a resonation of the Country’s values and ethos .The opening remarks by the key speaker representing the Principal Secretary State Department of Higher Education Mr Charles Obiero was a call on the student Leadership fraternity to influence the youth in achieving the country’s vision through sound leadership and citizen engagement in a transparent and fair way. Other key guest speakers were Prof Ole Kiyiapi, Prof L. Mahiri (Vice Chair IEBC), Eric Achola (NCIC),Ambrose and Luccas Mkirema (Nairobi Water Company), Mr. D. Otwoma  (Ministry of Devolution) and Commissioner -Amina Ahmed of the Commission for Revenue Allocation(CRA).

Various stakeholders including sponsors like Nairobi Water Company, Brand Kenya, Kenya Revenue Authority, and CRA. Were present to offer guidance within the leadership space. The Main organizer was Mr. Peter Quest – Inspiration Kenya Executive Director.

The 2nd leadership forum will be held on the 18th February 2016 at the Management University of Africa which will be a seasonal Leadership Training for Kenyan Universities Students Leaders. It was attributed as the start of enlightening young leaders in our country and was applauded the Deputy Director of Academics Moi University-Nairobi Campus a good start for the journey with similar remarks from various heads who were present.

The University Management gave a big Kudos to Mr Peter Quest for his dedication and service to the youth of Kenya, and an extended Asante to all the Student Leadership present. As Beth Revis stated,

“Power isn’t control at all — power is strength, and giving that strength to others. A leader isn’t someone who forces others to make him stronger; a leader is someone willing to give his strength to others that they may have the strength to stand on their own.”
