Engineering Students Showcase Innovations at Expo 2018

Moi University Technology Students’ Association (TSA) held their 24th Innovations Expo on July 20, 2018 at main campus to showcase their innovations to the industry and the public.

The annual event was held at the Students’ Centre under the theme “Realizing the Sustainable Development Goals through the Adoption of Innovative Technologies and Practices”.

TSA Expe Pictures Pic 10The event was organized in line with the School of Engineering policy to advance students’ abilities to be innovative and package what they learnt in class into viable prototypes and projects worth patenting. 

The Expo was presided over by Prof. Joseph Christopher Odhiambo, Dean, School of Graduate Studies, on behalf of the Vice Chancellor, Prof. Isaac Sanga Kosgey.

Prof. Odhiambo urged the student leadership not to relent in organizing the auspicious event and took his time to have a look at what the students’ innovations. Among the guests present from the industry were Mr. Bryan Cuthbert Jr., Chairman Kenya Association of Manufacturers, Uasin Gishu Chapter, Dr. Erick Ruto, Managing Director, Reale Hospital, Mr. Brian Khaemba, CEO, Xavier Group of Technologies, Mr. Willy Kenei, Vice Chairman, Kenya National Chamber of Commerce, Uasin Gishu County, Eng. James Langat and Ms. Barbra Akelo, Safaricom PLC representatives, Ms. Donzila Msitu from KCB Foundation, Eldoret East and Mr. Patrick Wachira Njuguna, Davis & Shirtliff Eldoret Branch representative.

The guests were received by Mr. Severinus Kifalu, the Head of Department of Electrical and Communications Engineering, who thanked them for their partnership with TSA and Moi University at large.

In his address, the TSA chairman, Mr. Kennedy Okumu Akosi, recognized the cooperation and support the association has received from the industry to enable them get judges and audience for the Expo.

For the first time, TSA incorporated students from the School of Medicine, which saw showcasing of outstanding innovations including the HIV Subdermal Implant that will help eradicate swallowing of ARVs, should it be patented. The Dean School of Engineering, Prof. Simiyu Sitati, appreciated the student leadership for being at the forefront to steer the event. He thanked the sponsors of the Expo and urged them to come on board and fund the School of Engineering in facilitating creation of an innovation hub within the University to help nurture students’ innovations.

Mr. Antony Mbayaki, Moi University Technology Transfer Officer, reiterated Prof. Sitati’s sentiments, and urged students to invest in current technologies since “We are moving to internet of things (IoT) and robotics will take the center stage”.
